Black Dynamite |
If you have ever seen a Blaxploitation movie in your life (and hopefully enjoyed it) you simply have to see Black Dynamite. This is one of the finest spoof movies ever made.
Michael Jai White stars as the titular hero, a former CIA agent on a revenge mission to find and kill his brother's killers. Together with the most wonderfully spoofed set of sidekicks (a parody of every 70s black movie or TV character features somewhere in this film) Black Dynamite is an unstoppable force.
The movie has a bizarre plot featuring adulterated malt liquor being marketed at the black market and drug pushers targeting kids in the orphanages (Black Dynamite having been in an orphanage).
But it doesn't stop there. It also manages to cram in a love interest, bizarrely contrived situations and dialogue (all played wonderfully straight by the cast), Kung Fu scenes with the most stereotypical martial arts bad guy you're ever likely to see, over the top sexuality, appalling 1970s fashions, both clothing and décor, and some great homages to the bad filming standards of the source material.
You name a movie making faux pas and this film will feature it somewhere - bad cuts, poor continuity, and so many, many more. But it's obvious right from the get go that this is all done with great affection. This is not a merciless mickey taking. This is a film aimed at Blaxploitation fans. Oh and the haircuts – oh dear, the haircuts.
Just go watch it!
