The Horde (French with English Subtitles/Dubbed English) |
What do you get if you cross Night of the Living Dead with From Dusk 'Til Dawn, add in an apocalypse and set the whole thing in France?
A group of French cops go rogue, embarking on a revenge mission following the death of a comrade at the hands of drug-dealing gangsters. Their attack doesn't go to plan however and they are easily captured. And that's when things change.
For just as the gang members are about to kill them zombies attack. Deciding upon strength in numbers the two groups join up and attempt to escape the zombie horde.
The first thing you get about this film is the filmmakers have absolutely no problem with violence - this is brutal in the extreme. The second is that none of the characters have any redeeming feature whatsoever. Oddly enough though it doesn't seem to matter.
The best feature of the film is its setting. The action takes place within an old, run-down tower block. It adds an extra level of decay and despair to the movie and introduces a claustrophobia that heightens the tension - and it's only increased with the occasional reference to the hell that is happening to the world outside.
Okay, there are a number of negatives about the film. The acting is a little forced at times, the dialog over the top, some of the effects are a bit dodgy and there is not even the slightest trace of originality in the plot. But don't let that put you off. This proves the French can make horror.
